Data and coverage

Where Atlas data comes from, how it is licensed and what it covers.

Atlas holds more than 1,200 public datasets and over 8.6 million mapped features, covering 51 African countries and territories (October 2026).

Sources

  • Global Mangrove Watch (version 4.1) for mangrove extent and change from 1996 to 2025.
  • WWF Kenya Sources for detailed Kenyan layers on land, water, wildlife, infrastructure and communities.
  • Berkeley Voluntary Registry Offsets Database with the Gold Standard and Plan Vivo registries for carbon projects.
  • UNEP-WCMC for seagrass (version 7.1) and salt marsh (version 6.1), shown on the map only because of the publisher’s licence.
  • UNDP project data published openly through the IATI Registry for nature and community projects.

Licences and honesty about accuracy

Each dataset shows its licence and its required credit. Where a location is approximate, for example a town named in a project record, Atlas says so on the map instead of implying precision.
